This Stockport mill was originally a ropemaker's workshop dating back to the Victoria era. Back in the 16th century, Stockport was just a small town on the south bank of the Mersey that specialised in the cultivation of hemp and rope-making. Up until the 1800s, all ropes had been braided by hand, before automatic braiding machines were invented in the Victorian era and rope factories became capable of producing high volumes of braided cords. The town eventually became part of the booming cotton industry in the north of England. As with many northern towns, Stockport suffered as a combined result of war and economic changes, but has begun to reinvent itself as the leading commuter town to Manchester while capitalising on its rich heritage buildings
