Majority of UK’s landlords and tenants like each other

A new research has revealed that the majority of landlords and tenants in Britain have a good relationship.

When asked in a survey from landlord insurer Direct Line for Business about the most important things in a relationship with their landlord, tenants said they wanted them to respond quickly, set a reasonable rent and draw up fair tenancy agreements.

Furthermore, the survey also suggests the idea landlords and tenants don’t see eye to eye is nothing but a myth as 69% of landlords surveyed explained they had a good relationship with their tenants.

One third of landlords said they think they are good friends with their tenants and only 2% stated they had a poor relationship with their tenants.

However, 15% of landlords also said they had no communication whatsoever with their tenants as all interactions were organised by a management or lettings agent.

Landlords seem just as confident about the future of their rental property and the country’s market. A total of 76% said they were confident they could rent out their property if their current tenants decided to move out within the next six months with 27% being very confident there would be no void period, meaning they wouldn’t miss out on any rental income.

Many tenants won’t tell landlords about damage in rental homes

Christina Dimitrov, business manager at Direct Line for Business, explained:

“The idea that landlords and tenants can’t get on is a fallacy, as many of these relationships are very positive and are often long lasting. Having a good relationship with your tenants is beneficial as they will be more likely to flag problems with the property quickly, enabling the landlord to arrange for a swift repair and therefore minimising inconvenience and expense for both parties.”

For landlords, the top three characteristics they’re looking for in possible tenants are: paying rent promptly (mentioned by 58%), being respectful of the property and its contents (mentioned by 41%) and being clean and tidy (mentioned by 37%).
