Tunis - In a nutshell
Tunis - In a nutshell
You’d be forgiven for thinking you were in Spain or France, since North Africa’s coolest city is actually further north than Sicily and the European atittude is evident. The ancient winding alleyways of the Medina buzz with thoroughly modern cafes, boutiques and restaurants. Add a sleek new hotel from Alain Ducasse, thalasotherapy spas to relax in and a sparkling beach and you’ve got the perfect girls’ mini-break. In its hippie past, Brigette Bardot wandered the souks in her Kaftan, these days you’re more likely to spot neo-hippies, such as Madonna, buying silver Berber tribal jewellery and stocking up on olives and foutas (Tunisian, sarong-like wraps).
Who goes:
Madonna, Sting, Ewan McGregor.
What to do:
See the ruins at Carthage (£2.50 entrance), high above the city and the Gulf of Tunis. Explore the labyrinthine 11th-century Medina and its souks - haggle over the leather bags in rue Zitouna and Bedouin rugs in the Souk des Turcs. Wander up the hill to the pretty village of Sidi Bou Said, filled with white houses with blue painted doors. The narrow cobbled streets are lined with stalls selling painted terracotta plates and bowls, lanterns, slippers and jewellery. Recharge at a thalasotherapy spa (try the one at The Residence, below).
What not to do:
Friday’s in Tunis are like our Sundays, so forget shopping and chill on the beach instead. Don’t dress too skimpily, while modern Tunisia still a muslim country.
What to bring back:
Brightly coloured leather weekend bags (£12); coral and amber necklaces (£1.50); painted terracotta tagine plates (£5); embroidered suede babouches (£15); contemporary foutas from Le Comptoir d’Amilcar (32, Ave Bourgiba, Carthage, £8).
