Riads- Medina's Secret Retreats
Riads- Medina's Secret Retreats
Dark narrow alleys, peeling stucco walls and noisy markets may not seem like the setting for a tranquil retreat, but knock on one of the many carved wooden doors along Medina’s dusty lanes and that is what you are likely to find. A riad. A traditional Moroccan house built around an open courtyard with a garden or a pool in the centre
Riads were designed as private spaces for women and families, shielding them from the prying eyes of a congested city. Hidden behind the high walls each riad was a world in itself; beautifully decorated with coloured tiles, stucco carvings and painted wood.
The courtyard was enclosed by series of rooms and alcoves to serve as lounges and dining areas while the upstairs had the living quarters for the family. Clever architecture flooded the space with natural light, kept all the noise out and regulated the temperature through the different seasons. The gardens created an illusion of the outdoors..
Today these enchanted spaces make perfect hotels. Little pockets of calm in the heart of the Medina madness.
The trend to convert riads into hotels started in the early 90s and is still going strong. Nearly 400 riads have been lovingly transformed to regain their former splendour and there is a riad to suit every taste and budget. Take your pick from the comfortable shabby chic to the luxurious and opulent. No matter what you choose, you are guaranteed a warm welcome by hosts who love their job, a super comfortable stay and a la carte services.
After a day spent shopping for bargains and sightseeing, there is nothing quite like returning to your own little intimate space hidden behind an anonymous wooden door.
Time to shut out the noise and enjoy a perfumed bath, a candle lit dinner by the pool or simply lounge on the terrace under the stars. Truly magical.
Tips:
During Christmas and the peak season, mid-February to mid-April, you would do well to book in advance.
