Getting around in Sydney
Getting around in Sydney
Buses
The Sydney bus network is a great way to fill the gaps between places where the trains and ferries don’t service. There is also an extensive night service operating seven days a week from the city centre to the outer suburbs between 12.00 and 04.00.
At Central Station you will find the city’s main coach station for longer and interstate destinations.
Sydney Monorail and Metro Light Rail
The Sydney Monorail and Metro Light Rail provide quick transportation between the city and select inner precincts/suburbs such as: Darling Harbour, Star City, Paddy’s Markets, Glebe and Rozelle.
The Monorail operates 07.00-10.00 Monday through Thursday, 07.00-0.00 Friday and Saturday and 8.00-10.00 Sunday. The Metro Light Rail operates 06.00-23.00 Sunday through Thursday and 6.00-0.00 Friday and Saturday, with 24-hour service between Central Station and Star City.
Trains
The Sydney train network is extensive, covering most major inner and outer suburbs, with connections to the rest of New South Wales and interstate.
The times and prices vary depending on the line and amount of stops required, so it is best to consult the City Rail website.
Ferries
At the mercy of an awkward division of a veiny inlet, often the best way to get around Sydney is on a ferry. A ferry ride is also a great way to appreciate the vastness of the harbour and all its stunning views.
Sydney Ferries operates out of Circular Quay to various key inner city and suburban destinations. Operation hours are roughly from 06.30-22.00 weekdays and 8.00-19.30 weekends and public holidays.
