Getting around in Edinburgh
Getting around in Edinburgh
Getting there…by air
Edinburgh International Airport is a smallish, user friendly airport served by most major airlines and the usual budget carriers. It is 12 Kilometres from the city centre and the 20 minute taxi ride into the city will cost about £20.There is also a very good express bus service which leaves from outside the Arrivals area every 10 minutes. A return ticket costs about £5 and can be bought on the bus; the journey takes 25 minutes and terminates at Waverley Bridge near the main train station just off Princes Street which is the main shopping area. There is also a shuttle service which provides shared door to door transport into the city. This costs around £8 and can be booked online at www.edinburghshuttle.com
Getting there…by Rail
Edinburgh has two train stations – Waverley and Haymarket. Waverley is the main station and is situated at the east end of Princes Street, the city’s main shopping street. Travel from London Kings Cross takes between 4 and 5 hours and there are connections from most other major cities in the UK.
Getting there…by road
Edinburgh is easily accessible by the UK road network and driving time from London is around 6 or 7 hours. However, when you arrive you will find that parking can be very expensive so it would be advisable to make sure your accommodation has parking facilities. Once you are in the city you can get around easily by foot or on public transport.
Getting there…by ferry
There are regular sailings across the Irish Sea, the North Sea or the English Channel. The most convenient route from a channel port is to travel from Zeebruge to Rosythe which is only a 20 minute drive from Edinburgh.
Getting around
Edinburgh is a compact city and you can walk between most of the attractions without much difficulty although take some comfy walking shoes as there are a few hills. However, there is a good network of public buses if you want to take the weight of your feet. Lothian Buses do a day ticket which allows unlimited travel around the city for £2.50. For info on timetables, routes and night buses see www.lothianbuses.com.
If you plan to do a lot of sightseeing, there’s a Pass which can save you a small fortune in entry fees around town (it also covers the bus journey in from the airport).
Tour buses also offer hop on hop off transport so you can get on and off at whichever attractions you want to visit. Tickets start from around £9 and can be bought online at www.edinburghtour.com, at the Edinburgh and Scotland Information Centre, 3 Princes Street or on Waverley Bridge which is where the tours start.
