Getting around in Athens

Airport
Athens International Airport (also known as Eleftherios Venizelos) is the only civilian airport that serves the city of Athens. It is about 20 km to the east of central Athens.

Travelling from the airport
The traveller can chose from bus, train or taxi, all of which depart from outside the terminals. From the airport to Syntagma station, Athens’ main city square and public transport hub, the journey is approximately 40 to 60 minutes long, depending on traffic and mode of transport. Metro tickets cost €6 and bus tickets cost €3.20.

A taxi will cost approximately 25€ to 30€. Although taxis don’t have a fixed price to and from the airport, there is the standard airport fee, standard luggage fee and the cost of tolls.

Visiting monuments around Athens on foot
As all the historical monuments are located in the centre of Athens, we recommend you purchase a map and set out on foot.

Taxis
The yellow Greek taxis are easy to spot and easy to find in downtown Athens, the airport, port and rail stations.

Note: Double tariff applies between the hours of 12 pm and 5 am. Greek taxis do not take credit cards.
