Eat, shop and snooze in Copenhagen

Compact Copenhagen is the capital of the world’s oldest Kingdom. Once a humble fishing village, it has evolved into the glittering capital of the Danish Empire and underwent another metamorphosis when the title, ‘European City of Culture’, was bestowed on it several years ago. Its civilised air, friendly locals, great restaurants, bars and shopping make it a spot on destination for a weekend break.

Where To Eat:
La Crevette, Vesterbrogade 3, tel: 33146003
Exclusive fish restaurant housed in a pavilion in Tivoli Gardens, only open during the Tivoli season, from April to September. Bow-tied staff provide smart table service. Try the lobster cappuccino to start with and perhaps follow on with pickled salmon slices and oyster flan. Leave some space to finish your meal with the delicious fresh pastries.

Peder Oxe, Grabrødretorv 11, tel + 45 33 11 00 77; www.pederoxe.dk
Located on the site of Denmark's oldest monastery this restaurant is an oasis of calm.

Good choice of food including an excellent salad bar, organic meat and glisteningly fresh fish. When you’ve made up your mind what you want to eat, just switch on the little green light above your table.

Shop Till You Drop
Pedestrianised shopping street Strøget has a wealth of shops, from budget-friendly chains to expensive designer labels including Prada, Max Mara and Louis Vuitton. This is also where to find some of the city's finest design stores, including Royal Copenhagen Porcelain, Georg Jensen for cutlery and silverware and Holmegaard for glassware.

The Danish Design Centre at 27 Hans Christian Andersens Boulevard is an exhibition centre cum shop with an interesting choice of books and stylish gifts to buy.

Fun, modern Frederiksberg Centret Shopping Mall has shops galore, while Waterfront Shopping, 100 meters from Strandvejen in the former Tuborg Harbour, offers a blend of trendy stores in interesting surroundings with bar, cafes, playground, fitness centre and aunique canal environment.
