Easter at home, despite the weather

Who said the staycation was dead? At Holiday Lettings 85 per cent of all UK holiday homes are booked out for the Easter weekend, so I somehow think that prediction came a little early.

But what is it that draws us to holiday in Blighty, especially with a forecast such as we have for this weekend? It would appear we go in search of fresh air, adrenalin and unpredictable weather. The most popular UK destinations this Easter are the Lake District, Snowdonia and Peak District where you’re sure of some wind through your hair, rosy cheeks and the odd gentle hill or two to get the blood flowing.

The Lake District has such broad appeal from adrenalin junkies, through to families and older generations who crave the fresh air, the challenge of the peaks and beauty of the waterside setting. As the UK’s largest National Park, the Lakes boast Scafell Pike as its highest peak and Wastwater as its deepest lake and over Easter it caters well for the arriving masses. With children in mind there are egg hunts galore and many references to Beatrix Potter characters. It is any wonder there are so many holiday homes in the Lake District, when demand for them is so high. But this part of the world doesn’t just benefit from tourism in the peak holiday seasons; it appeals all year around because of the vast array of activities on offer to its various tourist visitors.

Spring is when Snowdonia and all its fantastic activity options awake from the winter’s frost. The waterfalls defrost, the bluebells appear, there’s plenty of lambing going on and the Snowdon Mountain Railway kicks into action taking passengers from Llanberis as far as Clogwyn or Rocky Valley, depending on the conditions. The rugged mountain range of Snowdonia and the action pack centre of Betws-y-Coed draw crowds from across central England to hike and trek, ramble, cycle and climb all year around; even at Christmas Betws-y-Coed is heaving with tourists wrapped up in outdoor attire heading for the hills. The village of Beddgelert, about 25 minute’s drive from Llanberis has an Easter Trail on Easter Monday, which encourages people to see more of the village and rewards walkers with Cadbury’s Easter eggs. For a bespoke gift to take home, the Inigo Jones Slates Works near Caernarfon has a daily workshop open for made to order welsh slate products.

The Peak District was England’s first National Park and is reminiscent of school activity holidays, stepping stones to cross a racing stream, caves to explore and enchanting stately homes. The Heights of Abraham is one of the park’s most popular haunts allowing visitors to explore the cavern system deep in the hillside of Masson Hill. Thankfully, it can now be reached by cable car, which also offers stunning views across the Derwent Valley. Over Easter there is an Easter egg hunt and an Easter Bonnet Parade at Gulliver’s theme park near Matlock. Cottages in the Peak District are in demand at this time of year, but all year around too with such easy access to Derbyshire, Staffordshire and attractions such as Alton Towers and Thomas Land.

I think I’ve even talked myself into an Easter staycation now too!
