Burj al Arab - Dubai
Opulent Dubai
One of Dubai's top luxury hotels, the Burj Al Arab (the name means 'Arabian Tower'), is built like the sail of a J-class yacht on a man-made island linked to the mainland by a causeway and billed as the world’s first “six-star” hotel.
If you're staying at the Burj, you should not find it too difficult the land an invitation for one of the most lavish parties you will have ever seen. Towards the end of March, the ruler, Sheikh Mohammed, throws the party to end them all on the eve of the annual Dubai World Cup series of horse races, one of the glitziest race meetings on the international circuit, a sort of Ascot in the sun. You're guaranteed plenty of celebrity star spotting.
Take a warm starlit night in the desert, add hundreds of low tables laid out on carpets on the sand, exotic food, then bring on the belly dancers, the camels, some marching bands and fire eaters. Set up dozens of bars serving alcoholic drinks of all kinds and you have got one of the highlights of Dubai’s social calendar.
Small wonder the Burj al Arab attracts more than its share of famous faces from around the world, from jockeys such as Frankie Dettori to royals and even rock legends such as Ronnie Woods of the Rolling Stones, for whom, it is said, barrels of Guinness are specially imported.
