Alghero, Sardinia
Alghero, Sardinia
Behind thick fortress walls, the ancient, gated town of Alghero, whose name comes from the abundance of seaweed (alghe) in its dazzling aquamarine waters, is tucked away on Sardinia's north-western coast.
Entirely untroubled by the centuries that have passed, Alghero, a fishing port with a feast of fine beaches, remains relatively free of package holiday crowds and is a great place for a long weekend getaway, an idyllic spot of escapism.
The town’s ramparts and historic centre lend a medieval atmosphere and provide an opportunity to participate in the ‘passagiata’ or evening stroll with the locals.
In its tangle of ideal-for-getting-lost-in cobbled lanes, soaring flamboyant churches, colourful piazzas and cosmopolitan shops wait to be discovered. Popular attraction Neptune’s Grotto is close by. This impressive deep marine cave in the sheer cliffs at Capo Caccia is reached by boat or bus. Visitors can take a tour entering through the long narrow passage that cuts into the rock to view dramatically lit stalagmites and stalactites. Don’t forget your walking shoes – when you get there, you’ll have a heart-pumping 650 steps to clamber down before you get inside!
Foodies must go to:
Dolce & Piccante, Piazza Sventramento 4, no phone. A fine deli with amazing wine cellar.
Baronda, Piazza della Misericordia 14, 079 975 922
Duck into this chic bar for good music, fabulous cocktails and moreish nibbles
When in the mood for shopping:
Head for the old town. Via Carlo Alberto is best for gifts, while via Gilbert Ferret has elegant boutiques. An antiques, arts and crafts market is held in Piazza Civica on the last Saturday of the month.
