A holiday to Death Valley? You’ll kill for it.

A holiday to Death Valley? You’ll kill for it.

Just a short drive from Las Vegas, California's Death Valley is a very different kind of holiday destination.

It’s just after 7am, it’s over 100 degrees and I’m looking out at nothing. And it goes on forever. Actually, the nothing I’m looking at is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. It stretches out before me for endless miles in all directions, in a myriad of colours. This is Death Valley, and it’s like nowhere on earth. Now, this might not seem like the sort of place to come to for a holiday, I mean, for one thing there’s not a beach in sight, it’s about 110 degrees and the nearest shopping mall is about 200 miles east and to top it all your mobile phone won’t work.

Breathtaking scenery
But what you will get is scenery that’s breathtaking, a luxury desert resort with a full 18 hole golf course, fantastic trekking opportunities and of course that feeling that you are on a sort of pioneering adventure. All that’s missing is the chuck wagon rolling across them hills.

The Furnace Creek Ranch
So, after a brief two nights in Vegas for some R&R it was on to Death Valley and the resort of Furnace Creek. Now there are two choices here. Putting yourself up at the rustic Furnace Creek Ranch right in the centre of Death Valley will ensure that you get amply rewarded for your courage. The ranch provides sumptuous food, great wines, and believe it or not, the lowest golf course on the planet- some 240 feet below sea level (I know it sounds ridiculous but it is truly an excellent test of golf – particularly if you play in a 50 mile an hour hot wind like I did ). This oasis in the desert has it all, a pool, the golf course, very comfy accommodation, and a superb restaurant that would be hard to beat anywhere. When you get there tell Phil I sent you and check out the gigantic onion rings!

The Furnace Creek Inn
On the other hand, if you’re travelling from mid-October to mid-May you can opt for The Furnace Creek Inn, which is an altogether different experience. This is a five star luxury hotel that has a plethora of room sizes, a gourmet restaurant, a spring fed pool, tennis courts, horse riding and a garden oasis replete with towering palms. You can also of course play golf at the Furnace Creek Ranch. In fact both resorts share their facilities.

It’s a place where many of the celebrities playing at Vegas come to relax on their days off so you just might just do a bit of star gazing without the need to look up at the desert night sky.

Wide choice of places to visit
You will get a full list of places to visit both on foot and by car, and believe it or not Death Valley offers many options, from old mining ghost towns to Scotty’s Castle, a two million dollar mansion built in the early 1900’s by Albert Johnson after backing Walter Scott in a fruitless gold rush expedition.

I love Death Valley. It’s a truly unique part of the world. I love the colours, the heat (it’s HOT), the adventure, the scenery, the golf and of course the sheer nothingness all around me. You can get there from Las Vegas in under an hour and a half.
