New airport for Spain - 1 February 2008

Following possibly one of the longest consultation periods in the history of air travel, the Spanish government has finally given the go-ahead for an international airport to be built to serve the south-western city of Huelva, making access for tourists and overseas property buyers easier than ever before.

Previously, visitors had to fly either to Faro airport on Portugal’s Algarve or Seville, an hour away from the coastal resorts of El Rompido and Nuevo Portil. The new airport should begin to redress the imbalance uncovered in the feasibility study for the airport, which found that Huelva province is the least-visited of all of Andalusia’s coastal regions.

No-frills airlines are set to be among the first to set up route to the new airport, allowing for a boom in tourism and property sales. The newly-extended runway will also be capable of handling intercontinental flights, and there are estimated to be 1.5 million passengers using the airport within the first decade of operation.

Andrew Benitz, Director of local real estate specialists, Titan Properties, said, “Huelva is the fastest growing destination for golf tourism in Spain and mega golf resorts such as Costa Esuri fringed with residential property are driving thousands more visitors to our striking coastline with its pine-backed sandy beaches and stringent environmental standards. An additional International Airport is both logical and intrinsic to the Coast’s future growth and the news that Huelva has the official ‘nod’ is most welcome.”
