Bulgaria Opens for golf - 14 June 2007

As the cream of the world’s golfers head across the Atlantic to take on what the experts are referring to as one of the toughest US Open courses in recent years this weekend, they will be watched by huge crowds and a TV audience of millions of enthusiasts across the globe.

By contrast, the golfing community in Bulgaria is small, but growing. At the beginning of this year, there were just three full 18-hole courses in Bulgaria, two of which are owned by Air Sofia. How things will change over the next few years.

There are currently five new golf resorts designed by top-level professionals under construction, with more in the pipeline. In fact, when all of the planned courses come to fruition, weekend hackers and frustrated champions alike will have the choice of 40 courses around the country. Most of these new facilities will bear the names of legends such as Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Ian Woosnam.

Local interest in the game, no doubt spurred on by the amount of British overseas property buyers who are looking for homes on golf courses, has been increasing steadily. The newly-formed Bulgarian Golf Association is boosting interest in golf and hosting events in neighbouring countries.

On visiting the area in 2004, Gary Player said, “I have never seen more beautiful places anywhere. The countryside will be preserved and perfect golf conditions will be created” The Kavarna Hills development, marketed by Dream Homes Worldwide, will be within easy reach of one of Player’s courses, plus two others.

As interest in golf properties increases, this opens a third leisure attraction (along with beach and ski resorts) to draw investors to the country. Robert Jenkin, Managing Director of Bulgarian Dreams, comments: “Golf resorts have long been a popular destination for holidaymakers and second home buyers. These new golf developments are sure to lead to further foreign and domestic investment in the country and will make Bulgaria a serious contender as a golfing paradise.”
