Staycationers feed new rentals website - 30 June 2009
The credit-crunch-busting concept of staycations is feeding the development of a new Europe-wide holiday home rentals website. The founders of Domegos.co.uk have found that the number of enquiries from holidaymakers who are turning away from foreign shores in the teeth of the global recession to take their summer break in their own country has proportionally increased by 21 per cent in the past six months.
Dennis Klett, co-founder and director of Domegos.co.uk, says: “Consumer fear of the recession and reluctance to spend has pushed a lot of holidaymakers towards the staycation – not just in the UK, but throughout Europe and beyond.” In turn, this has prompted many property owners to take advantage of the situation or the first time by renting out their second homes to those staying in their own country for their holidays.
Domegos.co.uk is part of a Europe-wide group of websites who all share the same database, meaning that advertising a property for rent on the site gets it in front of potential holidaymakers right across the continent. The site launched its new beta version this week, and according to Klett, has seen a 157 per cent increase in new properties listed on the site. Many of these are from owners who may have had a second home for some years but who have never thought to rent it out for profit. As the credit crunch makes money tighter, this alternative source of income is providing welcome relief.
The latest version of Domegos.co.uk offers a free listing to home owners, and does not ask for commission or subscription fees. Owners get a dedicated page on the website for their property details, including photos, interactive Google map and much more. Each entry on the site is available in the UK and in nine other country sites and five different languages automatically.
Should owners wish to enhance their listing, becoming premium members, they benefit from preferred positions in search results and more customized pages. In addition, Domegos.co.uk offers owners a website creation service, costing from just £3 per month for a stand-alone website that can be fully designed and customized by the owner at any time. Finally, online availability calendars and reservations complete the package.
As staycations look set to continue rising in popularity across Europe, being able to rent out your property overseas not only to UK visitors, but also to holidaymakers across the continent could fill in the voids in your rental calendar.
