Repose in a pod - 21 June 2007

A revolutionary new hotel concept which promises to make travelling to your property overseas even more relaxing has been unveiled at London’s Gatwick airport. And instead of having to trek between terminals and through the maze of car parks to get from the hotel to check-in, “YOTEL” will be the first hotel to be located inside Gatwick’s South Terminal.

Launched by Simon Woodroffe, founder of the YO! Sushi restaurant chain, YOTEL will provide 46 ‘cabins’ of stylish accommodation for travellers designed along the lines of first-class airline cabins. Two classes of rooms are available for travellers looking for a solution to the misery of the early morning flights to some of the more popular destinations. The relatively low room rates also look favourable against the airport rates charged by many of the big hotel chains.

Standard cabins are available for £55 overnight or £25 for four hours for travellers on extended stopovers who would like to sleep and freshen up. The ‘premium’ cabins are priced at £80 overnight or £40 for four hours.

Many overseas property owners use the early morning flights of the low-cost airlines as the most cost-effective way of reaching their home overseas, and this solution could eliminate the tortuous early-morning dash to the airport. Mr Woodroffe said, “Travelling can be a painful experience so we are looking to make it as pleasurable as possible for our YOTEL customers. We expect this radical approach to be extremely popular with a range of customers and are looking to expand YOTEL globally.”

With bookings being taken online for the Gatwick YOTEL from 1st July and a Heathrow YOTEL opening in the coming months, you could soon be seeing these new concept hotels across major international cities. Woodroffe adds, “We like to think it’s the iPod of the hotel industry.”
