Holiday encouragement for overseas property - 20 March 2009

A new survey has shown that a large proportion of European still intend to go on holiday this year, despite the worsening economic conditions and the prospect of the worldwide recession – which should encourage holiday home owners to make sure they have their properties overseas ready to receive guests.

The survey, carried out by Gallup, the results of which were released by the European Commission, involved randomly-selected subjects from across the EU, and showed that only 19 per cent of respondents were certain they would not be travelling in 2009, compared to 32 per cent in 2008. Of the remainder, around 48 per cent said they were likely to stay within their own country.

More than half of those surveyed (56 per cent) said they would be organizing their holidays themselves. Combined with the fact that most will use the internet to do so, and that choosing self-catering accommodation is cheaper than staying in a hotel, owners of holiday homes in Europe would do well to make sure their property is also listed on a holiday rentals site within the same country as their property overseas. The numbers of domestic travelers looking for good-quality short-term lets over the summer months is set to rise significantly this year.

The most popular destinations were Spain, Italy, France and Greece, according to the survey’s findings.
