When looking into the possible destinations to buy a holiday home, we Brits tend to be drawn either to the average temperature graphs or to the figures showing the cost of living. These things, it appears, we equate directly to quality of life, and therefore use them as a basis on which to decide where to buy.

While this is by no means a bad way to decide where to buy overseas, there are also some other things you might like to consider. Other factors that can influence quality of life could also be influential in your choice of location for your new home. Open space, clean air, efficient and punctual local services and friendly, open locals are just some of the things that many of us yearn for when we look into moving overseas.

One place that never seems to grab any headlines in the overseas property world is Sweden. On the face of it, there should be far more people interested in buying there – flights are regular, cheap and short; the cities are cosmopolitan and lively, and property in spectacular locations is great value.

With around 24,000 islands, the Stockholm archipelago presents a fantastic opportunity to own a house by the sea for the summer months. The dream of having no other properties in sight for a summer retreat, while still being within reach of the developing ski resorts further north, is not inconceivable. Property can be found from £120,000 for a three-bedroom house on one of the larger islands, many of which are connected by bridges to the mainland.

As more people begin to look for alternatives to the purpose-built resorts they see as overpriced in southern Europe, and particularly those who don’t place over 300 days sunshine as their main requirement when looking for property overseas, Sweden could be an ideal option.
