Cruise into Dubai - 18 June 2007

As the first of the incredible man-made Palm islands approaches completion, news has been released of a further, permanent addition to add even more glitz and luxury to this exclusive address. The former Cunard ocean liner, and one of the most recognisable ships in the world, the QE2, has now been sold to Dubai World and will become a first-class tourism, retail and entertainment venue.

From 2009, this iconic vessel will be berthed at a specially-constructed pier at the Palm Jumeirah, the world’s largest man-made island. But this time, the developers will have refurbished and adapted the 40 year-old vessel to create a luxury hotel. Since coming to service in 1969, the ship, launched by the Queen in 1967 has undertaken 25 world cruises and crossed the Atlantic more than 800 times.

Plans for the ship include a museum to celebrate the ship’s rich history, and a refurbishment programme to restore the original décor of the vessel. Once in position, she will sit comfortably alongside the lavish and luxurious homes already built on the Palm – the first of three similarly-shaped reclaimed islands emerging from the Arabian Gulf.

The first residents were able to move into their homes on Palm Jumeirah in 2006, and the project is due for completion in 2008, adding to the incredible scale of building in the Emirate.

Dubailand, an enormous theme park complex on the edge of the city, promises to be several times the size of Disneyworld. What is certain to be the world’s tallest building, Burj Dubai, will finally be finished construction in 2009, the exact final height being a closely-guarded secret should anyone try to steal Dubai’s thunder. Given the size of most of the projects in Dubai, that is easier said than done…
