And the winner is... - 2 January 2007

We’ve all had the annoying phone calls – the overly cheerful voice declaring that you are the lucky winner of the prize draw (that you never entered) for a luxury cruise to the Caribbean (that you don’t really want). All you have to do is come to our timeshare presentation (oh…).

Imagine then, if you will, getting a call informing you that you have won your own private jet! That is the call that one lucky overseas property buyer will be getting as Dubai property developer Damac Properties offers the biggest promotion ever seen at the Dubai Shopping Festival. The top prize in this ₤12million giveaway is an Eclipse 500 private jet, and even if you don’t hit the jackpot, there’s plenty of reason to be cheerful.

This offer, which runs until the end of the Dubai Shopping Festival in February 2007, is open to customers who buy properties from Damac in any of the regions in which they have developments, and applies only to the first 700 purchasers. Regardless of whether you find yourself holding the keys to the ultimate in luxury travel, you will also have to find space in the garage for the Jaguar which the company is also giving to every buyer during the Festival.

Damac offers properties for sale not only in various parts of Dubai, but also in Jordan, Abu Dhabi, Qatar and Lebanon. And should you prefer not to fly in the most exclusive way, there is the possibility of a cash equivalent to the jet.

Let’s just hope that the winner’s reaction is somewhat different from that of a past winner of an overseas property prize giveaway. Leading Spanish real estate agent Andalucian Dream Homes ran a promotion in conjunction with developer Arenal2000 to give away a two-bedroom apartment overlooking a golf course worth over €250,000. With a variety of methods of entry, from going on inspection trips to token collect from magazines, the competition attracted a large amount of interest. When the winners were finally drawn from the hat, the management at Andalucian Dream Homes decided to pay a surprise visit to the lucky couple in their home town in the UK to give them the good news in person. The last thing they expected was for the winners to refuse to believe they had won this fantastic prize, with no strings attached. In fact, despite the protestations of the organisers, the new owners of a Spanish property refused to believe that they had won until they had the keys in their hands.

In these days of misleading, or just plain false, offers, it pays to be wary, but sometimes, just sometimes, you do get something for nothing.
