Cyprus dispute taken to the streets - 15 July 2008

A homebuyer who has been waiting for more than two years to resolve a dispute on the property he bought for his family in Cyprus has decided to camp outside the Cyprus High Commission in London indefinitely in protest at the lack of progress with his case.

Conor O’Dwyer has written to Cypriot president Demetris Christofias asking for justice in his continuing dispute with property developers. Mr O’Dwyer bought a property from a developer two years ago, and then complained that they were in breach of contract on a number of matters. The developer then allegedly unilaterally cancelled his contract and kept his £75,000, reselling the property in the process.

The developers have alleged that O’Dwyer masterminded a plan to extort a newer and more expensive property from them, as well as exorbitant damages. The case is yet to reach the courts in Cyprus, as is the case of assault on O’Dwyer as a result of him being beaten up last January. He had gone to Frenaros to take pictures of the house he had bought, and alleges that representative of the developers beat him up, requiring a hospital stay of six days.

In his letter to Christofias, O’Dwyer states: “I have been assaulted twice by my developers; both incidents were caught on camera. The evidence from the first assault in 2006 has still not been presented in court. Lack of legal action gave the developers free licence to assault me more aggressively in January 2008, where I was hospitalized for six days.”

August will make the second anniversary since he was to have moved his family to Cyprus, and also when the Minister of the Interior told the media he was looking into the unlawful selling of O’Dwyer’s house. O’Dwyer has outlined every detail of the case on his websites www.lyingbuilder.com and he has now set up www.ShameOnCyprus.com, which will document his protest in London. The 38 year-old ex-soldier will also post daily bulletins on YouTube.
