Canada's cheers and beers - 13 May 2008

Buying property in Canada has become more and more popular in recent months – due in part to the year-round nature of many of the resorts in the country and part to the new investment opportunities. Now comes news that the founder of the oldest brewery in Canada was a pioneer of the overseas property trade.

John Molson moved from Lincolnshire to Canada at the age of 18, fell in love with Quebec and then established the Molson brewery on the banks of the St Lawrence at Montreal in 1786. A well-known and highly-respected philanthropist, he became one of the most famous names in Canada.

He also made his family home in nearby Mont Tremblant, an area that has become the focus of much of the property development on the eastern side of Canada. Mont Tremblant itself is one of the highest peaks in the Laurentian mountains, and is also one of the best ski resorts in the eastern half of North America. So good is the skiing around Mont Tremblant, in fact, that Ski Magazine has named it the number one resort in East North America for eight consecutive years.

This part of Canada is not just about skiing though, and there are activities for all of the family to enjoy all through the year. If it isn’t skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing in the winter, there is golf, fishing, sailing and horseriding throughout the summer. This is part of Canada that really embraces the outdoor, family-friendly lifestyle.

There are many developments for overseas property buyers in and around Mont Tremblant, and Undiscovered Properties is promoting La Grand Forêt – a development of just 72 estate-style homes to be built on the former Molson estate. Each property is set in at least three acres of private land on the 265-acre virgin hardwood site. This gated development offers three-, four-, and five-bedroom homes starting from £403,000.
