Olympian plumps for Brazil - 6 November 2008

Following one of the most successful Olympic Games in the history of British sport, it is hardly surprising that the athletes need to get some peace and quiet away from the glare of media and public interest and their new-found celebrity. A property overseas is one of the best ways of doing this, and one of the biggest stars of Team GB has decided to invest in an off-plan property on Brazil’s north east coast as a retreat from a punishing schedule of training and media appearances in the UK.

Chris Hoy, who won three gold medals in the track cycling events in Beijing, has bought a property on the Laguna Beach development in Tabatinga in the Natal region. With the north east of Brazil just a six-hour flight away, buying property in Brazil makes sense from a lifestyle point of view as well as for investment.

“Laguna Beach has everything I am looking for in a high quality investment property,” Chris said. “Brazil is one of the world’s fastest growing emerging markets and its north east region is undergoing a massive boom in tourism. For me, the investment potential is incredible. My life consists of a gruelling daily training schedule. When you couple that with all the travel, the competition and my other engagements, I need somewhere special to go and relax. At Laguna Beach I think I will have found that place,” he says.

The Laguna Beach development is being sold by Obelisk International, and offers space, luxury and all of the facilities you would expect from a top resort – there is even a concierge service to help with any arrangements you need to make. The feeling of space on the development will be luxurious. Planning permission was granted for 154 properties, but the developers have decided to reduce this to 84 to make the most of the location and make sure views and surroundings are maintained for all owners.

With prices from £41,000 to £220,000 it may be that more of Chris’ teammates will be joining him soon. Bearing in mind the last Olympic Games were the most successful for British athletes since we were allowed to pick all of the events and insisted on only the ones we were good at and no-one else understood, it might be expected that more of the gold-medal winners will soon be able to afford a pad overseas. Let’s hope the pool is big enough for gold medal winning swimmer.
