Young yearn for Australia, mature head to New Zealand - 18 July 2007

There appears to be a definitive split in where else in the world Britons would most like to live. Those under 45 years old pick out Australia as their preferred destination, while once the 45th birthday has passed, it seems people are more interested in New Zealand.

This new research from Bank of Scotland International shows a yearning for long-haul emigration as a preference over moving to Europe. Spain and France are the favourite EU countries, with Spain being the clear favourite up until the age of 45, and France taking over for the slightly older generation.

The most popular countries in both instances can be seen to offer different lifestyle traits between the age groups for the different age groups. Spain and Australia, though still having their tranquil parts, have a more cosmopolitan and exciting lifestyle, while the focus in France is much more towards relaxing and taking time to enjoy the surroundings.

In this way, the choices made can be seen to reflect the changing priorities of overseas buyers as they begin to look towards retirement. If this is the case, be sure to check on the rules and regulations for retiring to particular countries. For example, there is currently no retirement visa to gain entry into New Zealand, and prospective entrants are required to have a large amount of cash in reserve to qualify for residence.
