Property in Australia singled out as investment opportunity - 3 July 2009

While the rest of the world is seemingly suffering form the continued effects of the global recession, it seems that those who are looking to emigrate from the UK permanently may have some good news to look forward to.

A new report has emerged that singles out Australia as one of the most potentially profitable property investment destinations in the world in the current climate. The findings of the report, conducted by DSR Asset Management Ltd, are in direct contrast to last year’s results, but suggest that Australia is one of the three best places to invest in overseas property in the world.

Australia, long seen as the favorite destination for Brits leaving the UK for good and a strong market for overseas property, is seen in the report as having strong prospects for the future due to it’s relatively strong economy compared to other countries. Other factor making the present time attractive for investors are low property prices and a weak Australian Dollar, according to the report.

The current conditions, which will not last for very long, are said to make property in Australia an attractive proposition for the overseas property investor. However, the re-introduction of a famous fare to the other side of the world should also pique the interest of those looking to make the move to Australia permanent. STA Travel, in association with Tourism Australia and Quantas, is offering a limited number of seats to Australia for £10 each way. The return of the ‘£10 Pom’ fares after almost 40 years is to mark the 30th birthday of STA, and harks back to when Brits were offered a second class ticket to Australia for just £10 with residency thrown in if they committed to work for a minimum of two years.

Elsewhere in Australia, the Briton who beat off competition from thousands of other applicants to land what was known as ‘the best job in the world’ has made a rough start to his time as caretaker of Hayman Island. The Daily Mail has reported that Ben Southall’s Twitter blog showed he had misspelled the name of the island, calling it instead, Hayward Island. With a salary of £70,000 for the six-month contract, the caretaker’s duties involve swimming, snorkelling the reefs, promoting the islands at every opportunity and maintaining island facilities, as well as posting regular blog entries. In addition to his salary, Mr. Southall gets to live in a luxury villa on the islands for the duration of his tenure in the post. Let’s hope his PR skills improve and he doesn’t need a £10 ticket home!
