Latvia: Jet to Let Guide to Latvia

The story so far…

Latvia’s strategic location on the Baltic coast led the country to be ruled by many peoples including the Germans, Poles, Swedes and Russians. It became a self-governing nation at the end of the First World War, but was annexed by the Soviet Union along with Estonia and Lithuania in 1940 as a result of a ‘non-aggression’ pact between Germany and the Soviet Union. Latvia gained independence in 1991 following the fall of Communism and has developed strong links with Western Europe. Latvia is now a successful member of the European Union (EU).

Where is it?

The Republic of Latvia borders Estonia to the north, Russia and Belarus to the east, Lithuania to the south with the Baltic Sea to the west. The coastline is 531km long and the country has a total area of 64,589km squared.

What is the weather like?

Latvia has long days in the summer and short days in the winter, with generally mild weather. The winter months bring snow that can remain until March, while rain is persistent and at its heaviest in the summer.
