Guide to Arizona

Getting there

Direct flights from the UK to Phoenix operate regularly from London, and with six international airports in the state, Arizona is easily reached with just one connection. Once inside Arizona, travel is best carried out by car.

Property

Most of the property development in Arizona for the British market is concentrated around the Scottsdale and Fountain Hills area to the east of Phoenix. This is where there have been some new developments built around golf courses and other sporting and leisure activities that are the main attractions in the region.

There is a range of property available in the area from huge and opulent ranch-style estates, to smaller developments of apartments and condominiums.

Buying property in this part of Arizona gives that advantage that you can be in the middle of some of the most spectacular scenery in the state and in an area that is not overly built-up amid golf courses and mountain views, while still being only a short distance from Phoenix and the international airport connections back to the UK.

The rental market in Arizona is in its infancy at the present time, and has nothing of the saturation or the sheer volumes that British buyers are used to in Florida. However, the region is growing in popularity with both American tourists and international travelers. The attractions of other parts of the state, and the Grand Canyon in particular, mean that demand is growing for good properties to rent for golf and family holidays.

A large three-bedroom apartment on one of the best golf developments in Arizona can be found for around $250,000 (£127,000), while a five-bedroom courtyard house can cost in the region of $3,950,000 (£2,000,900).

Local life

Arizona provides a couple of the most American of tourist attractions, although they are poles apart in their origin. The state is one of the most recognised places in the country for Native American art, and the Herald Museum showcases both historical and contemporary works. At the same time, the legendary Route 66 passes through Arizona, and is the main east-west street in the town of Flagstaff.

Conclusion

Arizona is considered to be a new market in the US for British buyers, but it has much to attract the investor as well as the leisure buyer. The obvious tourist attractions, combined with the profusion of golf courses and the outdoors activities that are available make this a great place for young families and those looking to spend more time outdoors. As the international property market warms to the idea of buying in the western part of the US with Las Vegas and California gaining in popularity, Arizona could become one of the best new leisure destinations.
