Spain: Castile-La Mancha (Castilla-La Mancha)
Overview
Castile-La Mancha (New Castile) is situated in central Spain and contains the provinces of Albacete, Cuenca, Ciudad Real, Guadalajara and Toledo. Castile-La Mancha and Castile and León historically comprised the ancient kingdom of Spain (Castile), occupying most of the central plain from the Cantabrian Mountains in the north to the Sierra Morena chain in the south (north of Córdoba). The area was divided into two autonomous regions in 1978. Castile-La Mancha contains 10 per cent of Spain’s landmass (79,226km2/30,589mi2) with just 4 per cent of its population (1.8 million). Its main towns include Albacete, Cuenca (famous for its ‘hanging houses’), Ciudad Real (the traditional capital of La Mancha), Guadalajara and Toledo (the former capital of Spain and one of its most striking and historic cities).
Castile-La Mancha encompasses the vast tableland of the southern meseta and consists mainly of flat plains of cereal fields, saffron, olives and vines, surrounded by mountains. It contains Spain’s largest wine-growing region, where low-priced wines such as Valdepeñas are produced and is famous for its cheese (queso manchego). The region has a Continental climate with long cold winters and short hot summers and low rainfall. It’s mainly agricultural with little industry and the rural exodus in the last 50 years has left many areas abandoned and desolate, particularly in the central mountain chain. Castile-La Mancha is of little interest to foreign homebuyers.
