Living in Croatia - 29 July 2009

We are hoping to buy a property in Croatia and to live there permanently. I have just noticed your website states that "a foreign national is now only permitted to be in Croatia for six months out of 12". I'd be grateful if you could confirm that this is definitely the case as at 24 July 2009; I have spoken with staff at the Croatian Embassy who were not able either to confirm or deny this fact. Obviously this is critical information for us, as we would be intending to live in Croatia full time. Many thanks for your assistance.

As with most countries, there are a variety of different options for residency if you are intending to be in the country in question for more than the usual extended holiday that buyers of overseas property sometimes take.
Croatia's rules are also changing quite often as the country prepares for a bid for EU membership in the next few years, which will only make it easier for UK residents to live and work there.
In fact, EU citizens are permitted to stay in Croatia without a visa for up to 90 days. Beyond this, it is necessary to apply for a temporary residence permit. As an EU citizen you can do this at a local police station ion Croatia, and it is relatively simple and straightforward to get.
You will need proof of property ownership, long term rental or proof of investment in a Croatian corporation to prove that you have somewhere to live while you are in Croatia. In addition you will need you passport, 2 photographs, proof that you can support yourself (income of 100 euro/day, credit cards or bank statements usually suffice), a criminal records check no more than six months old and proof of your own health insurance.
This will allow you to stay in Croatia for up to a year, but is easily renewed after this. Following a period of five years residence in Croatia, you will qualify to apply for permanent residency if you so wish.
