Diary of a buyer: Moving stories - 12 May 2008

The past few weeks have been taken up with helping our daughter move all of her possessions and family into their new home, and the experience has brought back all of the stress and hassle of moving house, but also provided us with motivation to keep on looking for our next home in another country.

All of this goes along in stages. Firstly, there is the dread at the idea of having to pack up everything into boxes, cartons and trunks to get it onto the truck – not forgetting labels, padding and confusion over what should be kept and taken to the new place, and what should be dumped.

Next is the effort of the day itself. Everyone has their jobs to do, and in moving a whole house, with attendant children is a full 12-hour day, even with the help of the professional movers. The satisfaction at the end of the day of physical effort is put against the prospect of unpacking the boxes over the next days, weeks and months.

All of this got my wife and I to wondering whether we really want to be setting out on doing all of this again for ourselves, and all at a significant age disadvantage to our daughter and her family. Add to this the stress and complications that will inevitably come from moving to another country, and we weren’t really sure if wouldn’t be better off staying where we are and spending the money on a series of long holidays.

The next day, we went stiff-limbed over to the new house to help with unpacking and cleaning, and to see how they were settling in. As soon as we walked through the door, we knew why moving overseas was still the right decision for us to make. Our grandchildren were almost a blur, racing around, exploring their new surroundings, and their enthusiasm for a new start was infectious. It made the whole house excited about this new adventure, and made the process of change easy for them to deal with.

Leaving the family in the evening to carry on unpacking, both my wife and I were excited about the idea of introducing the grandchildren to their (our) new house in a new country. Imagine how excited they will be to explore a new town in a new country with a new culture…
