Private Medical Insurance Guide

Regulation of PMI cover

The sale of PMI by the industry is watched over by the Financial Services Authority. This offers some protection over how these policies are sold.

Meanwhile, the Association of British Insurers, which represents the industry, operates a Code of Practice covering PMI. Its guidelines cover training, face-to-face and phone selling, as well as standards of documents and handling complaints.

You are also entitled to complain about your insurer to the Financial Ombudsman Service – but only in respect of the policy itself, not the medical treatment you may receive, which must be dealt with either by your insurer or the relevant medical authorities.
