In these busy times yoga routines get placed to the side for family and work events.

Classes get cancelled due to the holiday period. Whether its shopping, Christmas parties or family our regular routine gets disturbed. But its in these moments that yoga has its greatest effect.

Take a moment at the busiest time to adjust your posture and lengthen your exhale. Then notice the difference as the manic moment continues with more focus and awareness.

All aspects of yoga can be pocketsize, like a travel guide and taken with you. When you’re at work, commuting, in a meeting or at home with children. Take time to stretch the body with simple movements and adjustments. The effect can ward off feelings of fatigue and apprehension. By visualising positive outcomes and repeat affirmations a situation can feel lighter.

Over the Christmas and new year holiday period we cover many miles by road, rail and air. Long haul travel can take its toll. Poor posture and tight seating places strain on the body. The most subtle of stretching can be done without the glare of fellow passengers.

If you’re with children turn it into a game.

  • Mobilise joints whilst seated, start at the feet and work upwards.

  • Lifting knees to chest and back down.

  • Adjust your posture, seat height or back support.

  • Chair twists.

  • Shoulder rolls and neck stretches.

  • Eye exercises

  • Breathing exercises

If there is room to stand, walk along the aisles and adjust your stride length (as long as your not disturbing others…do ask a member of staff to check).

Try balancing on one leg , calve and hamstring stretches too.

    A stretch at Christmas

Balance vrksasana : the (Christmas) tree!

Stand with feet hip width apart, hands on your hips.
Transfer the weight to your left leg.
Place your right foot to the inside of your left calf or thigh.
Above or below the knee joint.
Firm your left thigh and engage your abdomen.
Press your palms together over head and stand tall.
    feel centred, rooted and balanced

    Repeat to the other side.
