Seaweed Wrap

What it is

Think of it as a deep cleanse for the whole body. A gentle form of detoxification for your skin and system, a seaweed wrap simultaneously slims, remineralises, relaxes, soothes and hydrates.

What it does

The secret of a seaweed wrap’s success is in all the goodies it absorbs from the ocean - copper, iron, potassium, zinc, iodine, oxygen and all sorts of vitamins and minerals. In turn, they’re absorbed by the skin where they help break up fatty deposits and leave it feeling supple and smooth.

While it’s common to indulge in a seaweed wrap just to enjoy being relaxed, it’s useful for much more. It stimulates the circulation, making your blood flow better and improve your skin tone. It also increases the metabolism, boosting your energy and allowing you to lose weight more easily. The body, mostly made of water itself, welcomes the hydrating properties of seaweed.

How you feel

First you’ll be asked to undress and possibly asked to wear disposable knickers. Once you’re on the plastic sheet-covered couch, the therapist will start smoothing seaweed paste, mud or gel all over you. Be warned, it doesn’t always smell nice. But what it lacks in scent appeal it more than makes up for in benefits for your skin’s health and appearance.

Once the product’s been applied, you’ll be swathed like a baby in relaxing, warm thermal sheets and left for up to 45 minutes while the seaweed works its natural magic. If the thought of not being able to move your arms makes you feel uncomfortable, ask for them to be left outside the wrap. Most people find the initial sense of constriction turns into a sense of deep relaxation and ease as there’s literally nothing for you to do but surrender to the warmth and stillness.

At the end, the therapist will remove the sheets and you (or they) will rinse the paste off your body in the shower. You should notice a difference in your skin as soon as you dry off. In some spas, you’ll finish with a massage.

What you should know

Seaweed wraps belong to the thalassotherapy range of spa treatments, that’s to say, anything that uses marine-based products to beautify. On some treatment menus one would appear as detoxifying thalasso wrap, for example. If you’re unsure about what to choose, speak to the receptionist.

Drinks lots of water for at least a day after your treatment to help your system flush toxins, and help your skin stay supple for longer.

Timings vary from treatment to treatment from spa to spa, but between 60 and 90 minutes is the standard.

Wraps in general aren’t recommended to expectant mothers because of the way they raise the core body temperature.

The cost

Prices vary depending on the spa/salon, the brand of products used and the treatment length. You can expect to pay as little as £35 to £100 at a top spa.

The availability

Nationwide, although not that widely. Some brands/wraps are only available in certain spas. For the best thalassotherapy treatments head for the Irish or Mediterranean coast where spas use products sourced directly from the sea around.
