Scar camouflage - Joy Parker-Fleming, Patient Advisory Service

Scar camouflage following surgery

One of the most important concerns patients voice when considering an elective surgical procedure is the scarring it will produce, which is inevitable when any incision is made into tissue. As every patient’s healing is different, it’s impossible for any surgeon to give any type of guarantee as to how the scars will eventually mature. It takes approx. one year for scars to settle as they goes through various stages post op from raised and lumpy, red and still raised to white and flat (hopefully). It is at this stage they can be successfully camouflaged with the latest techniques in medical camouflage.

Often after breast surgery there can be scars, and the position of the areola shape might not match the patient’s expectations.

Scarring from breast enlargements is often underneath the breast so it will not be visual. A breast reduction scarring is usually around the areola continuing down the breast and is visual to the eye.

With the face-lift, there will be scars up behind the ears then diagonally across into the hairline which will be visible with ladies who want to continue to wear their hair in an upswept style.

Once the scarring has completely matured and the scar has turned white in colour, micro pigmentation can then be considered as a treatment, and gives the result of barely imperceptible.

Medical micro-pigmentation is the infusion of carefully chosen pigments to blend naturally with the patient’s skin undertone and camouflage any imperfections. Asymmetry can also be addressed with abnormalities and shape corrected to the position of the areola and nipple.

Micro pigmentation techniques can give you, an optical illusion by using different pigments to give a natural 3d effect creating a nipple, where this has been lost through a surgical intervention E.G. patients undergoing a Mastectomy
Areola restoration and scar pigmentation is not only a cosmetic alteration; it’s a valuable procedure that has emotional and physical benefits

This micro pigmentation technique is quite painless and will give a patient more confidence as it recreates a natural look enabling the patient to feel normal.

There are many companies and technicians doing semi-permanent make-up enhancements which cover eyebrows, lips, upper and lower eye-liner, but for medical camouflage you must check that your technician is fully qualified, insured and certificated to carry out medical work. Check their credentials and surgeons they will have worked with.

Patient Advisory Service recommends a London based technician who also works in various parts of the UK has been carrying out enhancements for 20 years, she consistently delivers high patient satisfaction feed back from both patients and surgeons alike.
