Rhinoplasty Fact Sheet

The objective

The purpose of a rhinoplasty - or ‘nose job’ - is to reshape the nose. In some cases this would involve making it smaller (reduction), in others it may involve making it larger (augmentation), or correcting a nose that has been mis-shapen through injury.

The procedure

The operation is usually carried out under a general anaesthetic and takes about 1-2 hours. Sometimes local anaesthetic with a sedative can be used.

The surgeon will normally make incisions under the nostrils to reach the bone and cartilage to sculpt the nose (closed rhinoplasty). In some cases, the incision may need to be made under the tip of the nose (open rhinoplasty) for better access. If an augmentation is required, bone or cartilage from other parts of the body, or artificial implants, will be used to rebuild it. The surgery might involve a combination of these techniques, as the nose may need to be made smaller in parts and built up in others.

The skin over the nose is very elastic so will easily re-cover the new shape after the operation. The nostrils may need to be made smaller to fit the new shape.

If the nostrils have been readjusted expect fine scars. If open rhinoplasty was necessary there will be a scar under the tip of the nose. Scars from closed rhinoplasty will be inside the nose and not visible.

The outcome

Following surgery, there may be considerable swelling for a few weeks and splints or dressings may need to remain in place for 1-2 weeks to allow the nose to heal in the right shape. Some bleeding may occur.

You will usually be able to leave the hospital after 1-2 days. You will be required to take around 1-2 weeks off work and strenuous activity must be avoided for 2-3 weeks.

You should expect a nose that is shaped more aesthetically and in better proportion to the face as a result of this surgery.

The risks

All general anaesthesias carry associated risks, but complications particular to rhinoplasty include infection, in which case any synthetic materials used to build up the nose may need removing, and heavy nose bleeds, usually occurring in the first 10 days after the operation.

There may be loss of sensation or even smell which is normally temporary but can be permanent.

There could be difficulty breathing through your nose, requiring further surgery to correct it.

You may be unhappy with the results, and desire more surgery, or they may not be as you expected but will be limited by the size and shape of your nose.

The costs

Privately in the UK expect to pay from £3,200 - £3,800. Abroad, expect to pay from £1,200 (Egypt) to £2,800 (Spain).

The availability

Rhinoplasty is a widely-available procedure at most private cosmetic surgery clinics in the UK and abroad, and available under the NHS only in extreme cases.

The popularity

This surgery is popular amongst men and women who do not feel confident about the size or shape of their nose, or who have sustained injuries to it. It may also be appropriate for deformities of the nose.
