Reflexology
What it is
Reflexology is an ancient technique where manual pressure is applied to specific areas - reflex points - of the feet, or less frequently, hands, in order to rebalance the optimum flow of energy in your body and stimulate the natural healing processes.
Although some spas call it reflexology massage - and it can easily seem like one when the practitioner is manipulating your feet in the most relaxing fashion - it is in fact a form of acupressure.
All parts of the body and mind are said to be 'reflected' in the feet and hands, and stimulating relevant areas is said to influence their corresponding organs and systems. The big toe, for example, is (energetically) directly linked to the head and neck, so working on it is claimed to relieve headaches.
Reflexology can feel a bit odd at first, especially if you don’t normally like someone touching your feet. It can also be a bit overwhelming. Imagine a pain you’ve had in your shoulder on and off for years melting away in seconds as someone puts pressure on the ball of your foot. Tension can be released, and pain dissolved, astonishingly quickly.
What it does
Many people treat reflexology as they would any other wellbeing booster - to help them relax, rebalance; basically feel more themselves. But because it works on emotional and mental as well as physical levels, it’s recommended for all sorts of conditions, including infertility, PMS, depression, sports injuries, migraines and asthma. It’s also used in some NHS cancer wards and hospices.
How you feel
While you can’t predict the after-effects from treatment to treatment, you’re likely to feel relaxed and calm to the point of wanting nothing more than a snooze or at least a lie down. You might even feel tearful or nauseous afterwards from the release of tension, toxins and negative energy. On the other hand, you might be full of beans! Ideally, book a session for when you have time off, at the end of the day, or whenever you don’t have to do anything taxing for the following few hours.
What you should know
A session typically lasts 45 minutes or an hour, though can be shorter. The first session tend to be a little longer because the therapist will make a note of your health history eg details of your lifestyle, stress, diet, and fitness levels. You’ll probably benefit from a single session but may want to have more; the practitioner/your intuition will advise you.
Reflexology is an unregulated profession which means anyone can call themselves a reflexologist. When approaching an independent practitioner (as opposed to one working in a spa), ask if they belong to a professional association and/or what their qualifications are. Better still, choose one on recommendation.
The cost
Reflexology typically costs from £30 to £40, rising in some luxury hotels and spas. Some places offer cheaper ‘taster’ sessions of around £25. It tends to be cheaper in the provinces.
The availability
Most spas and luxury hotels now offer reflexology, as do many alternative health centres and beauticians.
