Perfect Smiles For The Big Day - Dr. Asif Chatoo, London Lingual
Perfect Smiles For The Big Day
There is a growing trend amongst brides-to-be checking into their orthodontist many months before the big day, so that they have a perfect and confident smile for their wedding.
With the average cost of a wedding in the UK being more than £20,000, it is not a surprise that the bride wants to make sure everything is perfect for her big day – including that “Hollywood” smile. Undoubtedly our culture’s increasing interest in the celebrity life style and greater attention to self-image has played a significant role.
At my clinic, we have seen a 30% increase in women booking in to have orthodontic treatment in preparation for their wedding. This trend appears to be in line with research from CONDÉ NAST Brides magazine’s survey into the UK wedding industry. This shows 35% of brides would consider cosmetic surgery for their wedding, an increase of around 21% year on year.
Some may find this increase strange during a recession, but research has found that the majority of couples are not willing to scale down during a downturn. In fact it is even more of a reason for a big party with family and friends to clear away the blues.
Exotic locations
Increasingly, couples are looking to marry in exotic locations. According to market research company Mintel, weddings overseas now account for an estimated 16% of all UK marriages, a rise from 10% in 2003. Often these are so called ‘bikini weddings’ on tropical beaches, were there is even more emphasis on the bride to look her absolute best – and that includes her smile.
For the majority of brides-to-be visiting my clinic getting their perfect smile with orthodontic treatment is top of their planning list - alongside beauty and fitness routines. They know they are the focus of attention for the day and obviously want to make sure they look their very best. A perfect smile increases their confidence and self-esteem. They also want to look back on their wedding photos and see themselves laughing and smiling, instead of being paranoid about showing their teeth.
For many of my patients, having orthodontics has been on their ‘to do’ list for some time, but planning their wedding has spurred them into action. With a wedding costing more than a family car, they are also aware that their new smile is an investment that will last forever. Unlike the big day which passes so quickly.
The trend for women getting cosmetic dentistry for their wedding is also being put down to people delaying marriage until they are older – with many not tying the knot until their early thirties. Often more planning goes into these weddings and the couples, established in their careers, are paying for the event themselves and therefore are not willing to compromise – including looking perfect themselves for the big day.
I find that brides-to-be are opting for lingual, or so called ‘invisible’ braces, because the treatment is very discreet and they can avoid the ‘Ugly Betty’ train track look. Often their husbands-to-be are totally unaware they are having the treatment. Some have even got married with the appliances still in place. The computerized, tailor-made design ensures the wearer is less affected by lisping or tongue irritations.
Brides-to-be are also reassured by the fact, that with lingual braces, the majority of patients start to see the results of the treatment relatively quickly.
My advice for any brides-to-be who are looking to get the perfect smile for their wedding via lingual orthodontics is to seek advice at least 12 months prior to their wedding, so there is sufficient time to straighten the teeth and get the desired result. We want to make sure every bride has a dazzling smile on the day – and for years after.
