Pelvic Training and Fitness

Tonicity is a new health and beauty clinic in London, which offers pelvic health and anti-ageing treatments for women. Nicci Talbot paid a visit to find out what's on offer.

Pelvic health is something most of us take for granted until something goes wrong. Regular visits to the gynaecologist aren’t as commonplace here as in the US or Europe, and are still considered to be a little embarrassing. Yet, according to studies, one in three women suffer from light adult incontinence, a common condition, which is entirely preventable and treatable via pelvic floor exercises. Most of us pay attention to diet and exercise but we’re less aware of the importance of pelvic health. During my first pregnancy I was given a factsheet on PC exercises post-birth, and I think this is the first time it’s ever cropped up in conversation with a health professional.

Non-Surgical Health & Beauty Treatments For Women
Tonicity is a new health and beauty clinic in London, which aims to tackle these issues head-on, educating women about the importance of good pelvic health and showing that there is a natural alternative to invasive surgical procedures. The word ‘tonicity’ means ‘the state or quality of having good muscle tone’ and the clinic’s ethos is curing and maintaining good pelvic health.

"Most pelvic floor conditions are avoidable, or even curable, but women do not know about the options aside from drugs, surgery or simply enduring the symptoms," says women's health physiotherapist Jeanette Haslam.

Tonicity’s Pelvic Floor Treatment Packages
Tonicity offers five treatments, which are a combination of electro-stimulation techniques, aimed at improving core body strength, and biofeedback techniques, which monitor muscle strength and movement.

1. Natal is described as ‘Europe’s premier post-natal treatment.’ It aims to restore the body to its pre-pregnancy condition. Pregnancy and childbirth can lead to complications and pelvic girdle pain (Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction), which is when the pubic bones can twist out of alignment, leading to joint pain and discomfort. This requires manual treatment with a physiotherapist specialising in women’s health. Natal is recommended from six weeks’ post-birth, if there are no complications. This gives the body a chance to self-heal.
Tonicity also offers Natal classes led by a women’s health physiotherapist.

2. Fleurie is an anti-ageing treatment, which targets the waistline, pelvic floor, deltoids, and levator-ani muscles. It aims to rejuvenate the core body, reverse the effects of ageing, change how we move, and improve sexual response. Six-eight 30-minute sessions are recommended.

3. Aspire is for women who regularly perform high impact sports and exercise. Over time, this type of exercise can weaken the pelvic floor so it’s important to factor in a pelvic toning exercise regime. This treatment will repair any existing damage to the pelvic area, and help to improve performance.

4. Wave helps prevent common continence conditions, which affect up to one in three women. Light adult incontinence is defined as the urge to urinate when laughing, sneezing, coughing, or during exercise. Regular trips to the toilet during the night are also a sign of a weak pelvic floor.

5. SU-MI cures bladder and continence problems. A course of eight treatments is recommended.

Treatments cost £45 per session excluding Fleurie, which is £65. Post-natal exercise classes are £25 each. The clinic charges a one-off fee of £25 for the initial consultation and individual treatment plan.

Strong pelvic floor muscles play a big part in our overall health, vitality and wellbeing – putting a spring in our step. They will also improve libido and sexual sensation, enabling the vagina to grip the penis properly during intercourse. Orgasms will also be stronger and more satisfying.

Pilates is great for core body strength and helps identify and address any postural problems, which may be caused by pelvic weakness. It enables clients to identify and strengthen the pelvic floor and maintains good posture, which reduces long-term stress on the body (it reputedly makes you taller!)
