Nu Skin Galvanic Spa System - Nicci Talbot

The Non-Surgical Face Lift

Nu Skin’s Galvanic Spa is a home spa system, which can lift the face and ‘erase wrinkles in one session’ according to devotees. According to Nu Skin, it can help boost the skin’s overall appearance and condition, and reduce fine lines, bags and wrinkles.

Nu Skin’s head office is based in Provo, Utah and the company has offices worldwide. It has been in the industry for around 25 years and is known for its innovative beauty and skin care products. The company employs a team of scientists to research and develop anti-ageing technologies, and tests out various products in collaboration with university research teams to evaluate how effective they are.

Researchers at Purdue University in the US recently identified a major source of ageing – an internal enzyme, known as ArNOX, which is found in the epidermis and increases as we age. Nu Skin’s latest innovation to address this is a product called AgeLOC – facial gels for the Galvanic Spa System that contain an ingredient, which helps slow down the ageing process.

Using the Nu Skin Galvanic Spa System
The Galvanic Spa kit comes in a travel-sized pouch and consists of a galvanic (electric) instrument that emits a low-level adjustable current, and four detachable conductors for different body parts (face, body, scalp and a petite one for focus areas around the mouth and eyes). The conductors are used with the Pre-Treatment and Post-Treatment Gels to gently massage the skin, drawing out toxins and improving tone.

The Pre-Treatment Gel is negatively charged and used with the instrument set to negative. Identical charges will repel each other, enabling the gel to penetrate the epidermis. This will negatively charge any impurities for extraction during the second stage of the treatment. The Treatment Gel is positively charged and used with the instrument set to a positive charge to draw out any remaining toxins leaving the skin lifted and glowing.

Start with a cleansed face and smooth the Pre-Treatment Gel on to your face and neck. Set the instrument to a negative charge and gently massage in set strokes around the face (video or product demos explain how to do this properly). The current is mild and you may not feel anything noticeable or a mild tingle in sensitive areas such as around the eye. After five minutes the machine will bleep to end its cycle.

It is important to keep your hands moist and in contact with the metal conductor at the base of the instrument so that the current works properly.

Remove any remaining gel with a cloth and water and apply the Treatment Gel for the second half of the treatment, repeating the massage process for another five minutes on the positive charge.

Pre and Post-Treatment Gels and AgeLOC
The Pre-Treatment Facial Gels contain TEA cocoyl glutamate, a low hazard chemical product, which cleanses the skin and allows it to breathe. Marigold, sea kelp and vanilla extracts are soothing agents that moisturise and condition the skin.

The Treatment Gels contain tocopheryl nicotinate (antioxidant/vitamin E); magnesium aspartate, a mineral supplement that aids stressed skin, and rose, sandalwood and jasmine extracts to moisturise.

The gels do contain parabens – preservatives added to beauty products to increase their shelf life. There is a suggested link to breast cancer although there is no conclusive evidence. However, many people wish to avoid them in everyday beauty products.

To try before you buy ask a Nu Skin distributor to give you a demo of how the system works and how to use it properly. There are a few tips and tricks such as how to hold the machine, how to massage the face effectively, and using a mist so the current works efficiently. Nu Skin distributors also receive a 30% discount on products, which is worth considering if you like the product and want to recommend it to others.

There are some negative reports about the Galvanic Spa on the Internet, which are based on experiences of the galvanic current affecting facial nerves after dental treatment. This isn’t recommended and Nu Skin issues the following guidelines for use:

“Check with your physician before using the Galvanic Spa System if you are pregnant, have a pacemaker, are epileptic, wear metal braces on your teeth, or have a metal implant”.

The Galvanic Spa System does deliver visible results after one session, and this is apparent if half of the face is treated initially to compare and contrast. Nu Skin recommends using the kit once or twice a week for the best results, although this can work out expensive given the cost of the gels (around £30 a pack and £260 for the machine). However, compared to the cost of regular salon facials using this type of technology, the home spa kit is significantly cheaper.

There are several YouTube videos demonstrating how to use the product.
