Nipple Reshaping Fact Sheet

The objective

The purpose of nipple reshaping surgery is to correct or alter the size or shape of nipples that the patient is unhappy with. Often, this may be to reduce the size of the nipples when they are perceived as too large, to correct inverted nipples, or to reposition nipples that are in an abnormal position.

The procedure

The operation is usually carried out under a general anaesthetic and takes about one hour. Before the operation, female patients may need to have a mammogram.

There are a number of techniques used, depending on the results to be achieved.

Nipple reduction surgery involves cutting two circles - one around the areola (the brownish area around the nipple) and one around the outer edge of where the newly positioned nipple will be. The skin between these two incisions is cut out and the edges are stitched back together to reduce the nipple size.

Inverted nipples are caused by tissue behind the nipple being too tight. To correct this, the surgeon will cut into the lower portion of the nipple and free the tissue behind it, allowing it to project outwards. The incision will be stitched.

The outcome

Following surgery, you can expect some tenderness and swelling for a few days.

There will be considerable swelling and discomfort for up to one week and women will need to wear a special support bra for up to six weeks. If stitches are not dissolvable, they will need removing after 10-12 days.

Normally, you’d be able to leave hospital the same day and will need minimal time off work, being able to participate in most activities as soon as you feel comfortable.

You can expect to have smaller, protruding or more desirably positioned nipples as a result of this surgery, depending on what it aimed to achieve.

The risks

All general anaesthesias carry associated risks, but complications associated with nipple reshaping include infection around the incision area and problems with wound healing, such as necrosis, where the blood supply is affected and skin dies.

Numbness or tingling in the nipple can occur, and there is usually a temporary difference in nipple sensation following surgery, but this can be permanent.

Abnormal scar tissue can also form around the incision areas and may turn red or lumpy.

It may not be possible to breastfeed after this surgery.

There may be an asymmetry of nipples after this surgery and you could be unhappy with the results.

The costs

In the UK, expect to pay around £700 - £2,200. Abroad, expect to pay from around £700 as a day care patient in Belgium, to around £1,010 in Tunisia.

The availability

Nipple reshaping is a widely available procedure at private cosmetic surgery clinics in the UK and abroad.

The popularity

appearance of their nipples. However, some women with inverted nipples seek surgery in the belief that inverted nipples may prevent them from breastfeeding. This is not necessarily the case. In some cases, nipple surgery itself may actually prevent them from being able to breastfeed. Some men may seek nipple correction also.
