Gold is the new green - 7 June 2007

A new orthodontic treatment in London has received the Midas touch – and a fashionable makeover.

Patients at the London Lingual Orthodontic Clinic have the option of getting bespoke braces made of 9 carat gold, which can later be recycled into jewellery.

Instead of traditional front-sitting braces, the gold lingual versions are placed discreetly behind the teeth.

Once removed, the braces can be made into jewellery, such as rings or pendants. Each set of braces contains around 10 grams of gold.

According to Dr Asif Chatoo, dentist and co-founder of the London Lingual Orthodontic Clinic, “more and more patients are looking to show off their enhanced smile, without revealing a mouth full of metal.”

He adds that the recycled jewellery gives his patients “a memento of achieving their perfect smile.”
