Cosmetic Dentistry beats the credit crunch - 16 March 2009

Despite the increasingly tight financial situation in which the majority of the Great British public find themselves, cosmetic dentistry is on the increase. The increase in this kind of treatment appears to be continuing even though many people have a sense of decreased job security and are cutting back on many other areas if their lives.

The award-winning cosmetic dentists and partners at The Perfect Smile Studios & Academy Rahul Doshi and Ashish B. Parmer are regular consultants on the TV show Extreme Makeover. They say, “Since the credit crunch first hit in the summer of 2008, the Great British public started to cut back on nights out and opt for nights in front of the TV with a takeaway. With the increased popularity of makeover shows it is not surprising that everyone wants a slice of the cosmetic dentistry pie.”

There are also indicartions that the credit crunch itself is one of the prime motivators in patients opting for cosmetic dentistry treatment. Research from the Times newspaper has recently shown that 74 per cent of adults feel that an unattractive smile could hurt a person’s chance of career success. Given the lengths people are prepared to go to in order to hang on to their jobs in the present climate, some people see teeth whitening, dental implants and teeth veneers as an essential treatment.

Despite the increase in tooth whitening toothpastes on the market, cosmetic dentistry is still the leader in terms of tooth whitening treatments due to the effectiveness of the treatments and the longer-lasting results produced. Patients may have staining caused by bad habits such as smoking, staining under the surface of the tooth caused by some antibiotics or even tiny cracks in the tooth enamel.

Mr. Doshi, who offers a full smile makeover treatment said he aims to make his studios more like a beauty salon than a traditional dentist’s treatment room. “We see so many people who require work on their smile, some through bad habits such as smoking, but others have been afraid to come to the dentist due to phobia.”
