Bullied pupils turn to surgery - 28 August 2008

A leading cosmetic surgeon has revealed that he has carried out procedures on school children who has been bullied about their appearance in an effort to lead a normal life. Douglas McGeorge, president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), said he had carried out rhinoplasty on one girl who had suffered bullying in three different schools.

In the UK, it is allowed for cosmetic surgery to be performed on minors with the consent of parents, as was the case with the 14 year-old from Essex who had surgery on her nose. Celebrity culture has been blamed on the pursuit of physical perfection among teenagers, and many see surgery as a way to achieve this. Mr. McGeorge, however, said that the reality was that many were victim to bullying and just wanted to look normal. He commented, “There’s a lot of stigma attached to appearance.”

He said he had also given teenage girls breast implants that expand the chest tissue gradually, in order to make them feel more confident despite the fact that they were developing at a slower rate compared to others of their age.

While anti-bullying charities say they do not condone the use of plastic surgery as a way of overcoming bullying, the surgeon said the procedure he performed on the girl from Essex had transformed her life, and made her much more confident.
