Men seeking hairloss help - 24 June 2008

Perhaps it is the increasing media attention on the hairlines of the rich and famous, or perhaps it is just the fact that more men are paying attention to their appearance and want to look younger, but recent figures show that enquiries for hair loss treatments in the past year have grown sharply.

In fact, the number of men seeking treatment for hair loss issues has nearly tripled, and more celebrities have conceded that they have had treatments in the past. As glossy celebrity magazines delight in ‘exposing’ the flaws of those in the public eye, both Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans and Dragon’s Den star Duncan Bannatyne have stated that they sought treatment for an alternative to baldness.

The Alopecia Clinic, which specializes in hair loss treatments for men and women, has seen a huge increase in enquiries in the past 12 months, and puts the rise down to increased media coverage of the male hair loss. Founder Andrew McCarthy said: “There has always been something of a taboo surrounding hair replacement treatments amongst men. But the fact that so many admired and respected personalities are now talking openly about it seems to have eradicated some of the stigma. The number of enquiries we receive from men has exploded in the past 12 months and this seems to be the reason why.”

While genetics are often blamed for male baldness, many other factors can influence how and when hair loss occurs. Stress, age, medical side effects, nutrition and psychological trauma are also contributory factors in many cases.

Treatments for hair loss can include natural remedies; low-level laser treatments to stimulate blood flow and growth, and more invasive procedures that involve transplanting hair to different areas of the scalp.

The latest developments in the treatment of baldness involve research that is currently being carried out into the possibility of cloning hair and placing it in the affected areas. This process is only in the very early stages of development with scientists.
