Pensioners turn to plastic surgery - 5 April 2007

The quest for youth has never been more evident as increasing numbers of the ageing population turn to plastic surgery to recapture some of their vibrancy…

As social stigmas surrounding surgery declines and disposable income rises, those aged 60 and over are opting for surgical procedures to look as young as they feel, including face lifts and eyelid surgery.

A survey from AXA Insurance reports that over 230,000 pensioners have had a cosmetic surgery procedure in order to look young. Eighty-three percent of the interviewees also stated that they always take care of how they dress, an indication of the way physical appearance is becoming more and more important among the older generations.

However, British pensioners still lag behind their Australian counterparts – only 2% of the population have resorted to cosmetic surgery compared to 10% Down Under.

The rise in ‘silver surgery’ is part of the overall boom in cosmetic surgery. Figures from the British Association for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) for 2006 show a thirty-one per cent increase in the number of people having cosmetic procedures.
