How do comaparison sites compare? - 16 April 2008

Recent years have seen a huge growth in the cosmetic surgery industry in the UK, and if the predictions for the future of the industry coming from practitioners and people in the business are correct, many more procedures and treatments will be carried out in the next few years.

This expansion of the cosmetic surgery industry has led to wider choice for patients, and consequently to confusion over where to go to get the best treatment for the best value. One of the resources that patients are increasingly drawn to are price comparison websites.

However, what purports to be an independent service that offers unbiased advice on the best deals for cosmetic surgery and procedures could be a sophisticated way for companies to market themselves, and for the comparison websites to make money by telling you what the best deal is for your chosen procedure – even if it isn’t the best value out there.

Studies of the home and motor insurance price comparison websites have revealed that in some cases the products and service that are recommended as offering the best value are not automatically that. There have also been suggestions sites which take a commission or agent’s fees for each of the products that are bought through them are unable to offer impartial advice to those looking for the best deals.

As ever, nothing beats independent research, and this is something which is far more important in the selection of a practitioner for cosmetic surgery procedures than it is for your car or home insurance. A good deal of time should be taken researching not only where the cheapest treatment is available, but what you want to have carried out, the time it takes to recover from treatment and how comfortable you are with your chosen consultant.

Price-comparison websites also lead into the dangerous territory of suggesting that by consulting a website for the ‘cheapest’ options is a way of cutting corners in research. Undergoing cosmetic surgery or procedures is something that need careful consideration, and should not be undertaken on a whim. The more research is carried out, the more comfortable you will be with your decisions.
