The wrinkle-busters - 22 May 2007

Face creams have long been popular among women who like to keep tell-tale lines and blemishes at bay, yet they, especially the most expensive varieties, are frequently surrounded by doubts about their efficacy. Do they actually work?

According to recent evidence, yes. A study, published in a US medical journal, claims that beauty products which contain vitamin A (retinol) may be able to fight the signs of ageing.

The study was carried out on a number of volunteers who were treated with retinol cream on one arm and a non-retinol cream on the other. Results showed that the signs of ageing (graded for this study) were lower on the retinol-slathered arms. When the tissue samples were analysed, researchers found that retinol increased production of two components of the skin that are involved in wrinkle reduction.

However, consumers should also be aware that retinol, also used as an ingredient in topical acne preparations, may cause redness, irritation and sun-sensitivity and that excess vitamin A is said to be associated with birth defects in pregnant women.
