Dangers of DIY Botox - 15 May 2009

A worrying new breed of mail order company has been uncovered offering potentially-damaging Botox jabs to the general public to use at home and without any training.

Most people are prepared to do more things for themselves at home during the credit crunch in an effort to save money, and may even consider carrying out some of their own beauty treatments at home, but administering your own Botox injections might cause most of us to pause for thought.

Botox has been one of the main drivers behind the huge growth in cosmetic surgery and treatments in the past few years – growing from a phenomenon used only by movie stars and the rich and famous to a treatment that women and men around the world use in a widespread manner. While the price of Botox jabs has reduced dramatically since its first uses, treatment can still cost more than £200 – which apparently is prompting some who wish to have Botox to look for cheaper ways of getting hold of the injections.

The widespread use of Botox as an anti-wrinkle treatment means that most people no longer see it as a procedure that carries any significant risks – and that remains the case when carried out by qualified and experienced practitioners. It should still be remembered that Botox is a poison, derived as it is from the Botulism family of toxins. Incorrect dosage, injecting in the wrong location or failure to take adequate hygiene precautions could all lead to problems for the patient.

While having a face scrub and mask at home may be a very effective way of saving money during the recession, most people will view buying Botox jabs over the internet from a source which offers no guarantee of authenticity or any recourse in case of problems as a bad idea. Nevertheless, some people are likely to be tempted into a cut-price deal, and risking their own health in the process.
