Inject to boost bust - 13 February 2008

A pioneering new treatment has been approved for use in the EU and could mean that breast augmentations and reshaping for those who prefer not to go under the knife could be a possibility within months.

The new technique, first introduced into Japan, involves injecting the breast with dermal fillers that are usually employed on facial areas. The injection is given as an out-patient procedure, and means that women could have treatment during their lunch break and without need to have a general anaesthetic.

Clinics in the UK are now trialling the treatment as a 30-minute non-surgical procedure to reshape breasts, using the gel-like material in the dermal filler injections as the latest quick-fix in cosmetic surgery under the current licensing of the injections.

Some surgeons are wary of this new technique, stating that the injections are currently licensed only for use in ‘body re-shaping’ treatments, rather than for the purposes of augmentation. Clinics offering the injections are hoping for the license to be extended to cover enlargements later in the year, while the currently permitted treatments are expected to become widely available in the UK nearer the autumn.

For some patients, this will open up the possibility of the surgery they have always wanted without having to go under the knife. For skeptics however, this is a sign of the proliferation of instant gratification of the demand for surgery – experts are fearful that some patients will make the decision to make changes to their body without leaving time for proper reflection and consultation.
