Boom in busts - 23 February 2009

As the UK goes bust, SurgiCare, one of the leading cosmetic surgery providers, has announced a 150 per cent increase UK women boosting theirs. Compared to figures from January 2008, 150 per cent more women in the UK decided to perk themselves up in the face of financial depression.

Anecdotal evidence also suggests that many have used their redundancy payouts to give themselves a lift. Mark Bury, chief executive at SurgiCare, said, “Perhaps women are having breast enhancement to boost their confidence, make themselves feel better and basically cheer themselves up as a result of the general depression gripping the UK at the moment, or maybe women that have been made redundant now feel they have the down time to undergo surgery. Looking good is a physical and emotional defence in hard times and it appears that cosmetic surgery for them is an essential, not discretionary, need.”

There has also been a big upturn in male cosmetic surgery, with male breast reductions (gynaecomastia) up by 164 per cent on 2007 alone.

As well as attributing this rise in the bust enhancements to redundancy payouts, many people who feel their jobs may be threatened are turning to cosmetic surgery to boost their chances of keeping their jobs when companies slim down the workforce. As the recession took hold last year, cosmetic dentistry clinics reported un upturn in clients as workers sought to make sure they looked their best for review meetings.
